CSSD design talks: P.P. Verbeek’s Approach to the Morality of Artifacts, 06/03/2024

The Complex Systems & Service Design lab continues its Design Talks series.

The second lecture is entitled ‘P.P. Verbeek’s Approach to the Morality of Artifacts’ and will be delivered by George Bekas. The event will take place in the CSSD lab space (room B.1.4, entrance from Rallis Street, opposite the entrance of the primary school), on Wednesday 6 March at 19:00. A discussion will follow.

About the topic

The technological age we are living in has a constant effect in our everyday life, creating more and more ethical dilemmas for the decisions and actions to be taken. Peter Paul Verbeek invites us to reflect on the ethical dimension of technology. During the talk, the philosophical movements that have been catalytic in shaping Verbeek’s thinking will be discussed, as well as ethical issues concerning human-technology interaction. We will examine the mediating role of artefacts that drives the attribution of moral meaning to non-human entities as well. Finally, Verbeek’s approach to creating intentional mediating roles in the design process and the resulting responsibilities and roles of designers will be presented.
